Fall Foliage Outlook in Minnesota
As autumn approaches, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) anticipates a vibrant year for fall foliage, thanks to favorable weather conditions. Unlike last year's wet spring and past severe droughts, this year has seen a dry May followed by adequate rainfall from June to August, allowing more leaves to remain on trees. DNR?s forest health consultant, Brian Schwingle, notes that optimal fall colors arise from sunny days, cool nights, and sufficient rainfall throughout the growing season. Current color reports indicate that certain areas in western Minnesota are already experiencing 25% to 50% color change, with peak colors expected in early October. The DNR has also introduced a weekly color update newsletter to encourage outdoor exploration during this picturesque season. Typically, peak fall colors last about a week and vary by location and weather conditions. The DNR?s Fall Color Finder tool helps track these changes, providing insights for Minnesotans planning their fall outings to enjoy the stunning landscapes.
